About our library in brief
In 1938, when the National Automobile Experimental Station was opened, a special library was established from the library stock of the Hungarian Institute of Technology and Materials Testing.
After its transformation into a scientific institute, the importance of library services (translations, circulation of journals) increased. In the context of the reorganisation of the national library system, the library of the Road Transport Research Institute – later the Scientific Research Institute for Road Transport (KÖTUKI), the Scientific Information Centre for Road Transport and the Scientific Information Centre for Transport, is given a significant networking role in the professional management of specialised transport libraries. Although this role was lost as a result of the changes in the market economy, from 1991, with the support of the Development Department of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Water Management (Hungarian acronym: KHVM), KTI library was given a new coordinating role among the specialised libraries in the transport sector in the implementation of a two-level information infrastructure development programme. As a result of the infrastructure development, the level of IT application in the four specialised libraries of the transport sector and in the different branches of KTI will be steadily increased and a uniform approach to library automation systems will be established in these specialised libraries. With the support of the Ministry of Transport, the combined database of these libraries will be available on the Ministry’s local computer network for several years.
In 2009, the service area and reading room of our specialised library will be completely renewed. New services will also be introduced, such as the Info Bistro and the Research Corner. Our reading room will also host several small events.
In addition to the basic public library services (on-site reading, lending, inter-library loans, acquisition, reading service and bibliographic advice), our Public Specialised Library will also build a computer database accessible via the Internet (in the SZIKLA Integrated Library System) and will maintain permanent contact with national and international organisations and educational institutions interested in transport, not least with libraries and database providers of foreign co-research institutes.
The library is also involved in publication editing activities. Its content supports some of the graphs in the Trends – Graphical Database publication, prepares the yearbook summarising KTI’s research and results from the previous year, and produces commissioned bibliographies and ad hoc publications.
