Our activities
The mission of KTI is to create a continuously developing, safe and competitive transport environment in Hungary, taking into account sustainable development and following the EU transport policy guidelines, in the interest of a liveable environment.
KTI’s scope of activities covers the whole transport sector, i.e. passenger transport, freight transport and infrastructure development together; and rail, road, water and air transport modes through horizontal elements such as transport safety, environmental protection, energy use in transport and the use of smart technologies.

Tradition and partnership
KTI Institute for Transport Sciences Non-profit Ltd. is a company of outstanding public benefit. Together with its predecessors, it has an 80-year history. Founded in 1938, the state-owned KTI is a research base of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology. In addition to the public sector, it has partners from the public and private sectors. With its overall research activities, KTI has a prominent position among transport research institutes in Hungary and Europe. Its highly qualified experts are highly respected both at national and international level, as reflected in the successful projects of recent years and the Institute’s extensive partnerships.
KTI has extensive international relations. It is a member of several international research organisations. It is an active member of the most prestigious international organisations in the field of transport research, safety, public transport and transport training (FEHLR, FERSI, ECTRI, AIPCR, CARE, IRTAD, UITP, EUROTRA) and has active relations with a number of European research institutes.
On behalf of the Ministry responsible for Transport, the “EU-UNECE Technical Coordination Centre for Road Vehicles” represents Hungary in international forums dealing with the development of European vehicle technical standards, coordinates the work of Hungarian experts participating in international professional forums and performs the professional background work for the incorporation of international standards, regulations and directives into Hungarian legislation.
KTI is a permanent member of the NB-Rail strategic working group through railway certifications. It cooperates closely with the foreign certification bodies RINA Service (Italy), Arsenal RACE (Austria) and SCHIG (Austria).
Resources and expertise
The research and development services of the Institute for Transport Sciences are all the more responsible for the environment and society. Taking this into account, KTI contributes at national level to the achievement of the competitiveness and knowledge base objectives set out in the European Council decisions.
KTI Non-profit Ltd. has a national public library with a collection of 40,000 volumes of books, research reports, “grey” literature, journals and CD/DVD databases, available to professionals and interested citizens.
KTI has accredited laboratories, ISO 9001 quality management and ISO 14001 environmental management systems.
