The KTI is Hungary’s leading professional institution in the fields of transportation and construction. Our mission is to contribute to the development of a safe, sustainable, and livable transportation system and built environment through our research, development, quality control, certification, and expert services.

Our institute has been serving policy and technical decision-making for more than 85 years. Its history spans from vehicle inspection through road engineering and highway transportation research to becoming a professional support institution with a comprehensive transportation perspective. Formed in 2026 through the merger with Építésügyi Minőségellenőrző Innovációs NKft., a company with a history spanning more than 60 years, this integrated institution builds on the traditions of transportation research and construction quality control, combining the knowledge and experience of both fields.

In the field of transportation, through our research, development, organizational, regulatory support, certification, training, and examination activities, as well as through data and analyses, we contribute to informing transportation policy decisions, improving transportation safety, and promoting sustainable mobility.

In the field of construction, through our quality control, laboratory, and expert services, as well as our support for technical regulations, we help create a safe, high-quality, and sustainable built environment, ranging from residential construction projects to large-scale government investments.

Our goal is to support our country’s development through reliable expertise, high-quality professional services, and innovative solutions, as well as to provide professional support to the Ministry of Transport and Investment and industry stakeholders.

Our activities

KTI’s mission is to create a continuously evolving, safe, and competitive construction and transportation environment in Hungary—taking into account the principles of sustainable development and following the EU’s construction and transportation policy guidelines—all in the interest of a livable environment.

Its mission is to support the transportation administration and sectoral stakeholders in their decision-making by providing data, studies, and preparatory materials. Furthermore, it aims to promote the quality, safety, and sustainability of Hungary’s built environment, ranging from independent quality control to innovation.

KTI’s scope of activities covers the entire transportation sector, meaning it encompasses the combined development of passenger transportation, freight transportation, and infrastructure; and, with regard to rail, road, water, and air transport, it addresses horizontal aspects such as transportation safety, environmental protection, energy consumption in transportation, and the application of smart technologies.

KTI can provide you with the options you need to make the right decisions in the field of transportation—specifically, research and development.

The Institute is Hungary’s largest construction testing laboratory and technical assessment and certification body, which is also actively involved in research and standardization. Its wide range of services includes accredited laboratory and on-site testing (structural, mechanical, acoustic, fire safety, and soil testing), as well as type testing of construction products. In addition, as an official technical assessment body, it supports industry stakeholders by issuing European and national assessments, providing product certification, and conducting domestic and international construction research.

Tradition and partnershipg

Together with its legal predecessors, the Institute for Transport Sciences and Quality Control in Building and Quality Control in Building looks back on a history spanning 85 years. Founded in 1938, the state-owned KTI serves as one of the research centers of the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works. In addition to state oversight, its partners come from both the public and private sectors. With its comprehensive research activities, KTI occupies a prominent position among transportation research institutes in both Hungary and Europe. Its highly qualified experts enjoy great recognition both domestically and internationally, as faithfully reflected by the Institute’s successful projects in recent years and its extensive network of partners.

KTI maintains extensive international connections. It is a member of numerous international research organizations.

It is an active member of the most prestigious international organizations dealing with transportation research, transportation safety, public transportation, and transportation training (FEHLR, FERSI, ECTRI, AIPCR, CARE, IRTAD, UITP, EUROTRA), and maintains active relationships with numerous European research institutes.

Among Hungarian institutions operating in the field of civil engineering, it has the broadest network of international relationships (CIB, WFTAO, EOTA, ENBRI, ECTP, EGOLF, UEATC, COVENANT OF MAYORS, EB CPR ACQUIS)

On behalf of the ministry responsible for transport, the “EU-UN EEA Road Vehicle Technical Coordination Center” represents our country at international forums dealing with the development of European vehicle technical standards, coordinates the work of Hungarian professionals participating in international professional conferences and performs professional background work on the international standards, regulations, directives for incorporation into domestic legislation.

KTI is a permanent member of NB-Rail’s strategic working group thanks to its railway certifications. It closely cooperates with foreign certification organizations RINA Service (Italy), Arsenal RACE (Austria) and SCHIG (Austria).
