Sustainable Transport Research Centre
Introduction
In our research center, we are working to find solutions for the implementation of energy-efficient and carbon-neutral transport, as well as to reduce noise pollution from transport.
Our main activities include the implementation of transport-related environmental R+D+I tasks and the monitoring tasks arising from related international obligations, the compilation of scientifically based decision-making materials for the Ministry of Construction and Transport and the preparation of legal regulations.
Our center performs audits of technical stations and vehicle maintenance activities, and also performs the certification of museum vehicles and related administrative tasks.
Our activities
- The domestic adaptation of the CNOSSOS-EU EU noise calculation method
- Creation of strategic noise maps and action plans
- Operational support for noise protection at the Hungaroring race track
- “By bicycle across 7 borders in 2024.” full implementation of program series and tenders
- Complete implementation of the 2024 tender for Bicycle Friendly Settlement (KBT) and Bicycle Friendly Workplace (KBM)
- Road Transport Environmental Action
- Development and analysis of techniques for measuring, reducing, and detecting malfunctions and influences of harmful emissions
- Cadastre calculation and data provision of total traffic emissions
- Museum certification
- Audit of technical examination stations

The purpose of the recently concluded CNOSSOS-EU project was to implement the professional adaptation of the new calculation method for creating strategic noise maps announced in Commission Directive 2015/996 of the European Commission (CNOSSOS-EU Directive).
I. Domestic adaptation of the CNOSSOS-EU EU noise calculation method
II. Preparation of strategic noise maps and action planse
The project, which is repeated every five years, is aimed at the development of strategic noise maps and action plans required by European Parliament and Council Directive 2002/49/EC in relation to high-traffic public roads and railways.
III. Operational support for noise protection at the Hungaroring race track
With the cooperation of our experts, the Hungaroring race track’s noise monitor system was built. We have been continuously evaluating the recorded data ever since. The use of our measurement results enables the track operator to plan track use from a noise protection point of view.
In 2015, the department responsible for transport launched the “Kerékpárral 7 határon át 2024.” program series, the aim of which is to promote environmentally friendly, healthy and safe cycling, as well as the useful use of free time, as well as the neighboring countries (Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria) and the strengthening of cultural, social and tourism relations maintained with their Hungarian-inhabited areas.
IV. Complete implementation of the ” Kerékpárral 7 határon át 2024.” ” program series and tender
V. Complete implementation of the Bicycle Friendly Settlement (KBT) and Bicycle Friendly Workplace (KBM) 2024 tenders
The purpose of the “Kerékpárosbarát Település” and “Kerékpárosbarát Munkahely” tenders is to support the promotion of cycling and to present a bicycle-friendly environment and infrastructure as a model. Settlements and workplaces that make efforts to encourage cycling, develop cycling infrastructure and create a cycling culture can participate in the tender. The tender aims to evaluate the quality of bicycle-friendly developments, share best practices and reward systematic developments.
VI. Road Transport Environmental Action
Within the framework of the program, the specialists of the Government Offices carry out environmental vehicle inspection measurements in Budapest, Győr, Szeged and Debrecen for 5 days, at different locations every day. The initiative makes it possible to regularly and continuously examine and evaluate the average environmental protection status of the domestic car fleet, as well as changes in the status.
Development and analysis of techniques for measuring, reducing, and detecting malfunctions and Automotive technology has undergone a huge development in the past period, which brought with it a multitude of complex technical solutions that are difficult to repair. In addition to the vehicle technology, the instruments and procedures used to check it must also follow the development process.
VII. Pollutant emission measurement, reduction and failure, as well as the development and analysis of influencing techniques
In the framework of the research, we examined the possibility of using hydrogen for transport purposes. One of the alternative fuels of the future could be hydrogen. It is not expected to spread on a large scale – mainly due to the price – but it has a right to exist in certain areas.

VIII. Total transport emission cadastre calculation and data provision
IX. Museum certification
Preserving the technical cultural heritage and the history of vehicles is an important task. The museum vehicles are not only objects of interest in the history of technology, but also eye-catching creations that are the subject of leisure activities that provide an experience for many.
X. Audit of technical examination stations
The 2014/45/EU directive on the periodic technical inspection of motor vehicles and their trailers and the repeal of the 2009/40/EC directive also contains regulations and member state obligations regarding the authorization and supervision of motor vehicle technical inspection stations.
